01Problem

Media convergence, and cable TV left behind.

The entertainment and advertising markets were reacting to media convergence. The project analyses that market and proposes a personalised system that streams the digital TV content a user already subscribes to.

What the project set out to answer

  1. 01

    Converging media

How entertainment and advertising were reacting to TV and the internet coming together.

  2. 02

    Content people already pay for

Streaming the digital TV a user subscribes to, instead of a separate service.

  3. 03

    Existing plans and packages

Making it possible to explore the plans and packages cable providers already offer.

How might we

…let subscribers stream the cable content they already pay for, personalised and connected across TV and phone?

02Define

From sketches to three visual directions.

The work started from its theoretical and historical basis. Every screen was sketched on paper first, then explored in three visual directions.

BecauseThe content is film and TV artwork; a dark ground lets the posters lead, on a TV and on a phone.

03App

The app: guide, control and friends.

The app carries the whole experience: what's on, the programme guide, the content itself, a remote control, favourites, friends and chat.

04TV & App

One system on the TV and the phone.

The same screens move to the television, with the phone beside it.

TV & App

Splash, home, guide, control and favourites, each shown on the TV and the phone together.

05System

A style guide for every platform.

A two-part style guide fixes the icons, type, colour and components. The connection between the platforms shows in the graphic design and the features.

06Outcome

From theory to a final prototype.

From its theoretical and historical basis to the final prototype, the project was developed with the user's experience in mind: in its graphic design, its features and the connection between its platforms.

  1. 01

    Converging media → one system

TV and phone work as one experience, not two products.

  2. 02

    Subscribed content → streamed

The content a user already pays for, in a personal guide.

  3. 03

    Plans and packages → explorable

The cable provider's existing offer, browsable from the app.

What I learned

  • Start from the market, not the screen

The market analysis framed the system before any interface was drawn.

  • Design the platforms together

Screens shared across TV and phone kept the experience connected.

Next timeTest the phone-as-remote flow with cable subscribers, and measure how often the guide leads to a show being played.
